Abstract

This article presents a chronological timeline of the organists and masters of the music at the foremost Anglican Cathedral in Nigeria, from the inception of the music ministry in the late nineteenth century to the present. It specifically focuses on the training and the selection of the masters from among members of the Cathedral Choir, a rarity compared to the other churches and choral groups in Nigeria. This essay also documents the appointment of the first female musician to hold this distinguished position. It is noteworthy to observe the tenures of three generations of one musical family in this historical account. These remarkable musicians have indeed proven their mettle as purveyors of exceptional musical artistry and world-class performances at the heart of classical church music in the most populous Black nation.
